Overview
Classified somewhere between a dental filling and a crown, inlays and onlays can fix a damaged tooth. Used on the back teeth, a dental inlay covers the concave center of a tooth while an onlay covers the tooth's upper, rounded edges. Like dental crowns and fillings, inlays and onlays can be made in several materials — metal, porcelain, and composite resin. Our skilled dental team can help Springfield, MA patients better understand tooth-colored fillings, crowns, inlays, and onlays so they can make the right decision about how to treat their teeth at People's Dental.
Best Candidates
An onlay or inlay is a good choice if you have a chipped tooth or a large cavity that is too big to get filled, but doesn't need the entire coverage of a crown. During your dental exam, our team can use your digital x-rays to determine the best procedure for your tooth. If an inlay or onlay is selected, we will explain the available materials that will best meet your requirements. You can also discuss whether you would prefer a direct restoration (an inlay or onlay made at our office with CEREC technology while you wait) or an indirect restoration made at a dental laboratory.
What To Expect
After applying numbing cream or local anesthesia to the treatment area will start by removing areas of decay. Stronger methods of sedation can be used if you have anxiety or a strong gag reflex. Once the tooth is cleaned, impressions will be made of the tooth. If you are receiving a restoration made in a lab, a temporary filling will be placed until it is prepared. Once your onlay or inlay is ready, will carefully place and bond it onto your tooth. They may polish the edges or adjust the fit so your tooth is properly covered and feels comfortable.
PeoplesDental Reviews
The best service in dental in the pine valley..
I love this place starting from the receptionist to the hygienist, they show concerns how they care and have a way to make you feel comfortable. Kayla and dawn are beautiful warm people. I highly recommend People’s dential!!!
Peoples Dental will always be a bright part of my day. They are family. Never had a bad time or a poor experience. Swing by on my lunch break yesterday to get a filling and I was back at work within the hour performing an Internal Audit with a smile on my face. I tell all my friends and family about Peoples Dental.
I went for my consultation on Tuesday the 16th. Upon entering the office, it is very clean and I was greeted with a "happy to have you here" by Julie at the front desk. They were knowledgeable and welcoming. Xrays are usually a challenge for me since my wisdom teeth are pretty far back. Nurse Dawn and Dr. Kelley had me out in about 20 minutes with a referral to a surgeon to get my wisdom teeth removed and schedule a cleaning before getting up. Highly recommend 😃
Office is super clean & bright. Everyone there was a joy to work with!

Recovery
If only local anesthesia was used, you will be able to leave after the procedure and return to your normal day. You may feel some discomfort, inflammation, or sensitivity for several days after your inlay or onlay is placed. Please contact People's Dental in the event you have any concerns after your procedure. Your onlay or inlay needs to be taken care of like your natural teeth with daily brushing and flossing. You should schedule annual dental exams and bi-annual cleanings at People's Dental so we can assess the health and wear of your onlay or inlay. With good care, it should last for many years before replacing or repairing.
