Dental Exam Springfield, MA

Overview

To keep yourself healthy, you need to be proactive with dental problems and get diagnosed and treated before they become painful issues. This is why it's important to schedule a dental examination for you and your family. While teeth are examined superficially during a cleaning, a dental examination provides a much more in-depth analysis. Dental exams at People's Dental evaluate your total health and oral hygiene, including decay, cancer, and other oral diseases. Our skilled dental team assesses the need for treatments or advanced restorations as well as checks the bite and jaw for problems. A series of x-rays can be taken to get better insight into the health of your teeth, jawbone, and gums. If you live in or near Springfield, MA, schedule a dental examination at People's Dental.

Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer includes any abnormal cell growth in the mouth, including the lips, gums, jawbone, salivary glands, tongue, and throat. Every exam at People's Dental includes an oral cancer screening to look for early signs including sores, inflammation, lumps, and lesions. Our dentists will also palpate the jaw and throat for abnormalities. If any areas of concern are found, a biopsy may be performed or you will be referred to a specialist for further care.

Best Candidates for Dental Exam

Patients of all ages should receive an annual dental examination. Often, people think they are fine because they don’t feel any pain in their mouth. Many common issues like gum disease (the biggest cause of tooth loss) may not have symptoms you will be able to see. If oral issues are found early enough, you will have more treatment options and a better chance at a full recovery.

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that babies go to the dentist before their first birthday. This can help with concerns like teething, using pacifiers, and baby bottle tooth decay. The team at People's Dental can talk to you about how to care for and clean your baby's mouth so they start healthy habits early — this will also help them throughout their life. Dental exams are also vital for children as they get older and their mouth develops. While baby teeth will fall out eventually, our dental team can watch for any development issues in the gums and jaw.

What To Expect

Your dental examination will start with an overall evaluation of your gums, teeth, tongue, throat, inside your cheeks, roof of your mouth, and other oral checkpoints. This includes looking for signs of oral cancer. A member of our team will take digital images and screen for abnormal tissue in the gums. We will evaluate your head, neck, and jaw, including your temporomandibular joints (TMJ) and bite while discussing any issues found and the best treatment options. Our skilled team will discuss any health concerns you have, prescriptions and supplements you may be taking, and how they might impact your oral health by causing dry mouth and tooth decay. Finally, they will examine any prosthetics you have, like crowns and dentures, to check the fit and wear.

Peoples Dental will always be a bright part of my day. They are family. Never had a bad time or a poor experience. Swing by on my lunch break yesterday to get a filling and I was back at work within the hour performing an Internal Audit with a smile on my face. I tell all my friends and family about Peoples Dental.

I went for my consultation on Tuesday the 16th. Upon entering the office, it is very clean and I was greeted with a "happy to have you here" by Julie at the front desk. They were knowledgeable and welcoming. Xrays are usually a challenge for me since my wisdom teeth are pretty far back. Nurse Dawn and Dr. Kelley had me out in about 20 minutes with a referral to a surgeon to get my wisdom teeth removed and schedule a cleaning before getting up. Highly recommend 😃

Follow-Up

How soon you need to return will depend on your oral health. If our dental team does not identify any concerns, then the only follow-up needed would be to continue a regular dental health regimen including brushing and flossing twice a day, along with annual dental exams and bi-annual cleanings at People's Dental. If we do see something that needs treatment, options will be discussed and scheduled.

Insurance Coverage

Since a dental exam is vital to your health, it is frequently covered by dental insurance. Our office will contact your insurance to calculate your coverage and any out-of-pocket costs. If you do not have dental insurance, People's Dental accepts many payment options, including medical financing. Our team can work with you to make sure you can afford good oral health.
